PREPARING FOR THE PHR EXAM WITH HRCI

This is a mid-level HR certification through HRCI. In order to qualify you must have the following education and/or experience combination:

– Have at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Master’s degree or higher, OR

– Have at least five years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Bachelor’s degree, OR

– Have at least seven years of experience in a professional-level HR position.

How Do I Study for the PHR Exam?

With the PHR, you can first assess your strengths and weaknesses by taking a self-assessment. This will help you understand what areas should be your primary focus. We recommend at least 12 weeks of studying 3-7 hours a week. In our signature HR review program, we offer a 12-week study schedule along with a comprehensive self-assessment designed to help you organize and focus your study efforts o the areas where you might be weakest.

Sample Test for the PHR Exam Test Questions

With HRCI exams, including the aPHR, PHR, and SPHR, all test questions are multiple choice and offer a single correct answer with four different options. The exams are weighted, meaning that each question is scored differently. The SPHR exam consists of 150 scored questions in addition to 25 pre-test questions that are not included in your final result. For HRCI certification exams, a score of at least 500 is required to pass, and the possible score range is between 100 to 700.

The SHRM-SCP certification is for individuals that have a work history of at least 3 years performing strategic level HR/HR-related duties; or for SHRM-CP credential holders who have held the credential for at least 3 years and are working in, or are in the process of transitioning to, a strategic level role.

Candidates for the SHRM-SCP certification are not required to hold an HR title and do not need a degree to apply.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they devote at least 1,000 hours per calendar year to strategic level HR/HR-related work.

Testing Windows and Fees for the SHRM Exams

Each exam requires that HR professionals apply for the exam and pay a fee. The application will ask about your work history, including experience working in HR and your educational background.

For SHRM, the testing windows are Spring and Fall.

2024 Spring Testing Window: May 1 – July 15, 2024

Applications are accepted beginning January 3, 2024. The early bird application deadline is March 31, 2024 and the standard application deadline is May 12, 2024.

2024 Winter Testing Window: Dec. 1, 2024 – Feb. 15, 2025

Applications are accepted beginning June 3, 2024. The early bird application deadline is September 11, 2024 and the standard application deadline is November 9, 2024.

Sample Test for SHRM-SCP Questions

SHRM’s test questions are different even between the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams. However, they both use a weighted scoring system and a score of 500 is passing. Keep in mind that with even the SHRM-CP exam, 40% of your exam questions will be situational judgement test questions. This can increase the chances that you will answer correctly and allow you to score higher and pass your exam.
